RELAY GAME #1

List facts about a composer your students have studied.

Make a copy for each team.  Usually, 4 to 6 for a class.

Cut the papers into strips, one for each question.

Put each pile into 1 cup or container.  Place the container by the board.  Students will write the answers on the board or use a clip board and paper.  I personally like to use clip boards so that the other students can’t see the answers.

Line up your students in their teams as far away from the question cups as possible.

The teacher says 1-2-3 ready go!

Whomever gives the correct answer first wins the point.

VERSION #2

TEACHER instead calls out the question and students write the answers the same as in version #1.

RELAY GAME #3

Rhythm Relay

Teacher holds up a rhythm card.

Each team player plays the rhythm with body percussion, instruments or writes the rhythm.

Whoever does it first wins the point!

RELAY GAME #4

Show what you know!

You’ll use the materials from the lesson you’ve been working on.

What skills did they have to use?

Those skills become the questions.

For example:  If the lesson was singing sol-la-mi in the song Frosty Weather, here’s some ideas for questions.

Sing the part of the song that has “la” in the melody.

Sing the part of the song that doesn’t have “la” in the melody.

Play the phrase “frosty weather” on the xylophone.

Clap the rhythm of the song “Frosty Weather”.

Make up a body percussion pattern for the phrase “frosty weather”.

You get the idea!

TEAM ANSWERS #5

Choose the questions.

Line students up like the other games.

This time, they can choose someone to help them!
