It’s summer and it’s time to map out summer music activities for children you can use at home, at summer school, music camp or the daycare. children love to sing, move, dance, play instruments and create things. Here’s some of my favorite summer music and movement activities for children.
There’s lots of opportunities to make music during the summer months. One thing I’ve noticed is that children love to share their favorite activities.
This song “Summertime” is loaded with ways we can enjoy the summer.
Sing this song, talk about the different things in the song, then have the children share one of their favorite activities.
You’ll love the literacy packet that has worksheets and coloring pages to use with the song. Available at the TpT store.
Use this fun Music and Movement activity to kick off your summer learning activities.

And it’s a great time to have music activities with outside!
In addition, the classroom setting may be more flexible, and you can do some integrated activities using movement!
so here are my ideas for summer music and movement activities.
I’m going to start with a themed summer activity idea. Why not center all your activities about one big picture idea?
I think that summertime is a great time to learn about Farm Animals!
You can use all these videos in your home or classroom and have a complete Farm Animal unit of activities.
Using these music activities, you’ll be able to connect learning animal names, sounds, the alphabet, counting and letter recognition through a variety of interactive songs, games, reading and writing and movement activities, reading and writing and.
I’d recommend creating a chart so you can write out your plan.
You might want to have a musical experience every day, or by the week.
Choose from a variety of activities that meet the needs of the whole child.

I think that including a variety of activities will help the children in many ways.
Try including these things in your weekly music activities for variety and experiencing music in different ways.
Let’s start with summer singing activities!
While I’ve listed these as sing along songs, they are also movement activities. But you can start by using them for the children to sing. Then add the movement component in later.
Farm Animal theme, let’s use a fun farm song.
They can move and sing to “What Do the Farm Animals Say?” a farm action song.

And, there’s a fun animal circle game where the children walk in a circle and get to take turns being farm animals.

FARM ANIMALS GAME “The Animals in the Circle”
Here’s a farm animal game for your summer music and movement activities.
Try playing this fun farm animal game with your students. Have everyone sit in a circle. Use the song “Old Mac Donald Had a Farm”.
You could use this book if needed. (You’ll go to Amazon using my affiliate link).
You may want to brainstorm all the farm animals and write them on the board.
Assign someone to be the “farmer”. The farmer stands in the middle of the circle.
Everyone pats their knees while singing “Old Mac Donald had a farm, eei, eei oo! And on that farm he/she had a “fill in here with a farm animal”, eei, eei oo! (The farmer must choose someone to be the animal before finishing that line-the sooner the better.)
Then the “animal” makes the sounds and acts like the animal.
You can have that person become the farmer and then the next chooser. This way, more students will get a chance to take a turn in the game.
If needed have the children repeat the animals. The goal is to give them the opportunity to dramatize and participate.
I’ve found that the children really love this type of game.
If you’re teaching music, or want to incorporate some music activities, here are some rhythm activity ideas.
Try playing this fun farm animal rhythm game with your students. Use the directions above, except give everyone an instrument.
Assign an instrument to each animal you’re going to sing about.
Instead of the farmer standing in the middle, choose someone to be the beat keeper and play a steady beat.
Instruments are only played during the line when the animal is singing.
If you want to step up the game, then create specific rhythms for each animal.
You can group students by instruments and then they all play the same animal too.
Using this song as a rhythm activity is a wonderful way to help children make musical connections through singing, moving, playing (instruments) and purposeful “play”.

You can use the songs as your movement activities too. They make great summer music and movement activities.
Be sure to encourage big moves, safe moves and cross body movement.
You can give the children a scarf and have them wave their scarves to any of the songs.
Use scarves with “Old Mac Donald Had A Farm”
This activity is like the game.
Instead of passing out instruments, pass out scarves.
Each animal is a different color.
Have the children double up or take turns as needed.
Go through the song and establish the order of the animals.
Have the children practice their parts before singing along.
Set clear expectations about movement. Do you want them to also act like an animal? Do you want them to only use their scarf?
Sing and have fun!
Connect learning using these Farm animal materials.

Create a YouTube playlist of your “go to” activities.
Write the activities into your planner with links to the videos.
