WAYS TO HONOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. MUSIC ACTIVITIES
I wrote this song several years ago and decided it was the right time to publish it on YouTube. Although a simple song, the lyrics are meaningful, and I hope capture the meaning of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The refrain says it all; “his dream lives on in you and me.”

“HIS DREAM LIVES ON” by Sandra Hendrickson
Vs. 1
Doctor King had a dream.
He believed all men are free.
And he taught the world to live in harmony.
His dream lives on. His dream lives on, in you and me.
Vs. 2
Doctor King walked for peace.
He showed the way for us to be.
And he taught the world to live in harmony.
His dream lives on. His dream lives on, in you and me.
Vs. 3
Doctor King said; “let us sing!”
Let the bells of freedom ring.
And he taught the world to live in harmony.
His dream lives on. His dream lives on, in you and me.
Vs. 4
Doctor King learned from the past.
He said; “We are free at last”.
And he taught the world to live in harmony.
His dream lives on. His dream lives on, in you and me. His dream lives on.

LISTENING ACTIVITIES for MLK DAY
“Oh Freedom”
The music is wonderful. You may find that the images are too mature for your music classes. I highly recommend previewing this video as some of the comments are not appropriate for children.
I would play the song and have a different picture posted on my screen- or none at all.

SING FREEDOM SONGS
Here are some songs to help students honor MLK Jr.
“Rise UP” by Jack Hartman
“Sing About Martin”
This teacher posted the sign language actions that I use too. I’d learn them first and then teach my kids the actions before we sing the song.
Using hand actions is another way to help students learn about Martin Luther King Jr. through music activities.
Here are the lyrics to this great song for your younger students.
- Sing about Martin,
- Sing about caring,
- Sing about peace all around the world.
- Sing about Martin,
- Sing about loving,
- Sing about Peace all around the world.
PLAY INSTRUMENTS
I think this activity will work great for your upper elementary students.
