MUSIC LESSON AND GAME SONG “Lucy Locket”

I love to use game songs in music class! I’m sharing this Free Resource to help teachers use a variety of interactive teaching strategies to keep everyone in music class engaged and learning.

There are so many learning opportunities in this lesson.  I’m using this lesson with my second graders, but the games and activities would be a great review for your third graders, or if you’re helping new students get the “solfege” system.

I’m implementing several teaching strategies all into one activity that will surely get all my students learning the music concepts.

MUSIC CONCEPTS

• Melody so la mi

• Rhythm

• Beat

• Ostinato

• Improvisation

Here’s How to Begin:

Because game songs are so interactive, they provide learning opportunities for music concepts and can be used to encourage  students  to experience improvisation.

The first steps are to learn the song rhythmically.

Students will pat the beat as I sing the song.

Then students will tap the rhythms.

Next I’ll have them sing the song using solfege.

Once my students can sing the solfege alone, then I like to move them to instruments.

BEFORE WE PLAY THE GAME

Ultimately, practicing playing the melody, ostinato parts along with the beat can be an entire music lesson.

I’ll use the OSTINATO page to review some easy rhythms students can use as an ostinato part.

There are so many options with this kind of lesson material.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

Using solfege, tapping rhythms and beat great interactive teaching strategies.

Consider putting students into small groups and have them practice each part. Then put all parts together.

Have students rotate through each part in stations.

Have students sing solos, duets, trios as the rest of the class plays the other parts.

Playing games, #1, #2, #3 as outlined in the Free Resource.
