It’s finally here! Summertime- and it’s vacation time for thousands of teachers. Many teachers have well laid out plans and then others have loose plans because schedules and travel dates haven’t quite locked down yet. The summer is a great time for reflection and renewal. As part of my summer time series, I’ve come up with 3 summer time planning tips for teachers.

SUMMER TIME PLANNING IDEA #1
VACATIONS
I love to be out in nature, and so it’s important for me to get where there is forest, trees and some water. I love to visit Colorado, and last year I went to Durango.
But the top trip of my summer planning involves getting tickets and gifts ready to visit my grandkids. Every year I take a trip to see my grandchildren and I try to make the visit at least a full week if not more. Now that they are all in school, I’m also offering grandma’s summer camp to them. My son and his wife plan a get-a-way and I take over the summer activities for a few days.
When I go visit my grandchildren I’m reminded of how my own children were at that age. When they do silly and “naughty” things, it helps me “get in touch” with elementary aged children all over again.
This vacation gives me PERSPECTIVE about child development and the stages kids go through every year.
So this summer time planning tip for teachers is to have fun on a vacation with family members.
SUMMER TIME PLANNING IDEA #2
STAYCATIONS
My husband and I plan summer staycations too. Mainly because it’s HOT in Arizona and he is still working.
As you know, I love to be out in nature, and so it’s important for me to get where there is forest, trees and some water.
Some of my favorites are Colorado and last year I went to Durango.
Nevertheless, if I can’t get to the trees, I plan a staycation right here in our home.
Here’s some some tips to put in your summer time planning for a relaxing and rejuvenating staycation.

SUMMER TIME PLANNING IDEA #3
MUSICATION
What’s a “musication”? It’s attending something to help you be a better music teacher or musician.
Not always, but most summers, I try to put some “musical”experiences into my summer planning.
I guess I need to FEEL the music for me (not just helping the kids), and I need to EXPERIENCE playing and making music.
There’s so many choices! I’ve attended Kodaly and Orff trainings, taken voice lessons, guitar lessons, violin lessons, taken graphic arts classes, attended musicals and friends recitals.

Wouldn’t you say that summer time planning is just as important as lesson planning?
Right?
I need/want/crave the time to relax and rejuvenate for the upcoming school year.
(Don’t You?)
Even if I’m working on products, songs and other business related tasks-it’s super critical for me to break-a-way from the routine and do things that help me get perspective and my teacher game back in place.
