If you haven’t had a chance to prepare for your MIOSM March is Music Month in Our Schools activities, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered! I’ve had a lot of fun putting together a variety of FREEBIES for MIOSM just for you.  They are forever Freebies because I want to say thank you to my fellow Music Teachers and help them celebrate MIOSM.  Keep reading to find all of my FREE ideas on HOW TO CELEBRATE MIOSM music in our schools month at your school.

Teaching music has been such a rewarding experience for me and has brought me a great deal of joy-and I hope a lot of joy to my Students. I’m passionate about teaching the “Whole Child”. And, I’m passionate about teaching music! I can’t envision a child growing up without the benefits of music education. Music is so important for children. It empowers their creative thinking, stimulates learning connections and opens their hearts to universal truths.

IDEA 1: PUBLICIZE MIOSM

Publicity is a key factor in making everyone aware that March is music in our schools month so that they can join in the celebration. So how can you do this without paper or prep? Hmm….how about having your students sing on the morning announcements? It doesn’t matter what song, just have them sing or play something. You could choose a grade level and let them sing on Friday’s during March. Or you could choose a class to sing every day (that sounds hard to me), or you could just do it on one day in March.
I like to take my students down to the office and perform for the office staff.  Got a school song? How about one morning where the whole school sings a song together?

How about having your students share their feelings about music in our schools month on the morning announcements?  Play classical music over the loud speaker in the morning.

IDEA 2: TEACH WHY MIOSM ROCKS!

RELEVANT LESSONS

Teaching music has been such a rewarding experience for me and has brought me a great deal of joy-and I hope a lot of joy to my Students. I’m passionate about teaching the “Whole Child”. And, I’m passionate about teaching music! I can’t envision a child growing up without the benefits of music education. Music is so important for children. It empowers their creative thinking, stimulates learning connections and opens their hearts to universal truths. That’s why MIOSM or March is music in our schools month is so important to me.

You don’t always need to have a “printable” to have a successful lesson. But music class is a great place to integrate literacy and music. Check out these ideas:

MUSIC AND LITERACY IDEAS

QUICK TIPS:
#1 Spend 5 minutes doing a quick activity about MIOSM

#2 How about a mini-lesson on Movie Music? You could demonstrate this by showing some clips of movies without the music (just mute it:). Then watch the clips with the sound. Divide students into small groups and then ask the students to compare and contrast with music and without.  Use your white board and let your students jot the comments down for you.

#3  Ask the students to share their ideas about how the music affects the emotions and drama of the story.

HOW DOES THE MUSIC MAKE ME FEEL?
WHY DOES THE MUSIC HELP THE STORY OR DRAMA?
DISCUSS THE DYNAMICS OF THE MOVIE MUSIC.
IS IT LOUD? WHY?
IS IT SOFT? WHY
FAST, SLOW, LEGATO, STACCATO?

#4 PAIR AND SHARE You can have a lot of fun using these questions in your classroom. One thing I do is to have my students share their ideas with each other instead of a whole group discussion. It’s called PAIR AND SHARE. I’ll have them all stand up and I’ll say; “Find one person to share one idea. When you hear the drum, switch.” I’ll do this three times. I walk around the room and listen in on what students are saying. The students love to talk and this is a fun way for them to share their feelings. I might even have a couple of them write their ideas on the board.

IDEA 3: COMPOSE A CHANT/SONG FOR MIOSM

Sometimes I like to begin class with an ice breaker activity-I like to mix it up because it keeps the students on their toes. How about passing out rhythmic pattern cards to students as they walk into the room. Then ask them to create a chant using some key words you’ve put on the board. If you have more time, draw a circle map and let the students brainstorm first. Or just put these questions up on the board and let students answer them in the chant.  Try using something familiar that you might already know-

Here’s some questions to ask them to think about:

WHY DO I LIKE MUSIC?
WHAT’S MY FAVORITE KIND OF MUSIC?
WHY IS MUSIC IMPORTANT TO ME?
WHY DOES MUSIC MAKE ME A BETTER PERSON?

After students have had a chance to create their chants, sit in a circle and share them. Try adding in some ostinato parts or melodic ostinati as time permits.

IDEA 4: DECORATE THE SCHOOL FOR MIOSM

Another idea is to just have a pen and paper available and let students write little notes about why they like music. Then I choose some of them to put on the bulletin board.

IDEA 5: SING SONGS TO CELEBRATE MIOSM

Instead of performances that are planned, take some of your classes through the hallways caroling. Check with classroom teachers to make sure there’s no testing during the time you want to go caroling. Pick songs that your students know or use these original songs that are easy to learn.

What’s the takeaway from all of these FREE RESOURCES? I BELIEVE that Music in our schools is critical to the education of every single child. Music fosters creativity, makes brain connections to all other subject areas and gives students an opportunity to experience emotions.
