Keep reading to find all of my FREE ideas on HOW TO CELEBRATE MIOSM music in our schools month at your school.
Teaching music has been such a rewarding experience for me and has brought me a great deal of joy-and I hope a lot of joy to my Students. I’m passionate about teaching the “Whole Child”. And, I’m passionate about teaching music! I can’t envision a child growing up without the benefits of music education. Music is so important for children. It empowers their creative thinking, stimulates learning connections and opens their hearts to universal truths.
IDEA 1: PUBLICIZE MIOSM
Publicity is a key factor in making everyone aware that March is music in our schools month so that they can join in the celebration. So how can you do this without paper or prep? Hmm….how about having your students sing on the morning announcements? It doesn’t matter what song, just have them sing or play something. You could choose a grade level and let them sing on Friday’s during March. Or you could choose a class to sing every day (that sounds hard to me), or you could just do it on one day in March.
I like to take my students down to the office and perform for the office staff. Got a school song? How about one morning where the whole school sings a song together?

IDEA 3: COMPOSE A CHANT/SONG FOR MIOSM
Sometimes I like to begin class with an ice breaker activity-I like to mix it up because it keeps the students on their toes. How about passing out rhythmic pattern cards to students as they walk into the room. Then ask them to create a chant using some key words you’ve put on the board. If you have more time, draw a circle map and let the students brainstorm first. Or just put these questions up on the board and let students answer them in the chant. Try using something familiar that you might already know-
Here’s some questions to ask them to think about:
WHY DO I LIKE MUSIC?
WHAT’S MY FAVORITE KIND OF MUSIC?
WHY IS MUSIC IMPORTANT TO ME?
WHY DOES MUSIC MAKE ME A BETTER PERSON?
