SANTA CIRCLE GAME SET UP
It can be played in any classroom.
It works with children ages four five to age eight, maybe nine years old.
This game is called Santa’s in His Sleigh, and it’s to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell.
This will make it easy for you to sing and most likely the children will be familiar with it too.
It’s a parody of the nursery rhyme and the game is easy to play. We’ll use some different words or characters and tell you how to play the game.
When playing a game without much prep, I usually go to the whiteboard, and I’ll have the students help me write the lyrics while I’m teaching it to them. That’s because I’m using this game when I have, ten minutes. Or maybe I got asked to teach an extra class, or maybe I didn’t plan enough. I don’t know, you just need ten 15 minutes of something, and you need a game.
I’m just going to write “Santa’s and his sleigh. Ho Ho! Away we go. Santas in his sleigh.” And then I’m going to have the students help me come up with the names of the reindeer or characters in the song. And we’re going to put the names on the board.
LYRICS TO THE SONG
SANTA’S IN HIS SLEIGH
To the tune of THE FARMER IN THE DELL
Santa’s in his sleigh.
Santa’s in his sleigh.
Ho, ho, ho away we go!
Santa’s in his sleigh.
HOW TO PLAY THE SANTA CIRCLE GAME
Make a circle.
Choose a “Santa” to stand in the middle of the circle.
Encourage the characters in the middle to act out their parts or dance around.
The outer circle sings the song and can walk in a circle or have them march and clap in place.
The first time, Santa won’t choose anyone.
Sing the verse again but change the words to
“Santa needs Dasher, Santa needs Dasher”
While singing “ho, ho, ho away we go! Santa needs Dasher!” Santa chooses someone to be Dasher.
Now the verse changes to:
Dasher needs Dancer, Dasher needs Dancer.
Ho, ho, ho away we go! Dasher needs Dancer.
Dasher chooses Dancer.
The song continues through each of the reindeer’s names. Each new character then choosing the next one until the end when Santa is going to choose the Elf and Presents.
After Rudolph is in the circle, Santa then is going to choose the “elf”.
Santa needs an elf. Santa needs an elf.
Ho, ho, ho away we go! Santa needs an elf.
Then the last verse is the “presents” and Santa is going to point to all the children left in the circle and they are going to come into the circle and have a dance party.
I explain that Santa needs an elf, and then Santa needs some presents. That’s why I save that part for the very end.
That’s how I play the game. I hope this, quick and easy Farmer in the Dell, Santa’s in His Sleigh game helps you during the crazy holiday times to get to the big winter break.
