LESSON STEPS

We’ll be using instruments to play when we don’t say the letters.

There are 2 ways to do this activity.

The easy way for littles is to have everyone play an instrument and they play together.

Jingle bells work well for this activity.

You can use the Free resource or write the letters SANTA on the board.

SING THE SONG

S-A-N-T-A Sung to: “BINGO”

1-I know a man with a long white beard

and Santa is his name-o.

S-A-N-T-A

S-A-N-T-A

S-A-N-T-A

And Santa is his name-o.

2-Eight little reindeer pull his sleigh.

3-He slides down the chimney with his pack.

4-He eats the cookies on the plate.

5-He calls to Rudolf from his sleigh.

6-He lives up at the cold North Pole.

BODY PERCUSSION

Have the children CLAP on the letter when they aren’t supposed to say it.

Practice the song as needed.

I usually do that the first class time and then wait to play instruments on the 2nd class.

Then play with instruments.

INSTRUMENTS

If you use a variety of instruments because you don’t have enough for everyone- you can have the children trade their instruments.

They LOVE doing that!

For upper grades I have a different instrument for each letter.

You’ll need 5 instruments to represent the letters in the word SANTA.

Write the letters on the board or screen (SHOW ON WHITE BOARD)

Place your instruments in order so that students have a visual cue.

I group the students by letter and instrument.

Practice playing instruments by chanting only the beat that the instrument plays and finishing the SANTA word.

Go through each letter/s so students can get used to waiting to play on their letter.

Repeat as necessary.

GROUP THE STUDENTS BY INSTRUMENT

I group the students and then have them switch letters/instruments every couple of times.

Another thing I’ve done is have the students be the leaders. So, I chose 5 students to lead the groups.  Then I switch leaders.

I like to give the students opportunities to lead and to shine!

PLAY THE GAME ANOTHER WAY

Another way to play the game is to have students choose the instruments for a letter.

And-there’s music tracks so you can use this at home, in school, in a concert too.

Looking for some instruments? You may want to check out these products on Amazon (I may receive funds) to help you get started with the activity.
