SING THE SONG AND DO THE ACTIONS
First I’ll sing the song and teach the hand actions. We’ll also do some “turkey play” to the music to get in the mood.
There are many versions of this song, be sure to use one with a nice easy TEMPO that the children can sing and move along with easily.
TEACH STEADY BEAT
This song is a favorite of mine and my students! It makes a wonderful music and movement activity for young children. They love to sing the song and do the turkey actions as well as play instruments and the game!
Playing instruments to show the beat is another way for children to experience feeling the beat.
I’m using a shaker to play the beat.
I demonstrate playing the beat in the video-so take a look there to see how it goes with the music tracks.
PLAY THE RHYTHMS
Next we’re going to get out the rhythm sticks and play rhythms.
You can have the children clap the rhythms first and then move to instruments.
The goal is to give the children as many different opportunities to experience the beat and rhythm through hearing, feeling, seeing, moving and playing activities.
Be sure to watch the full video or listen to the podcast for the teaching tips and details.
