Halloween Song with Music and Movement Activities

Halloween means it’s time for scarf music and movement activities. “Halloween is Coming Soon” music lesson with Dynamics, Mood and Scarf movement tutorial.

This is a teaching tutorial meant for music teachers and parents and caregivers to learn the song, music teaching ideas and scarf movement actions to use in their preschool, home and school activities.

These activities support the National Music Education Standards and are intended to be tutorials for teachers.

Here’s some ideas on how to turn this song into a complete music lesson.

In this post I’ll share how I teach the song, and then explore the difference between the song “TWINKLE, TWINKLE LITTLE STARY” and the song “HALLOWEEN IS COMING SOON”, which is in a minor key.

Then I’ll use those two songs for a short and easy fast/slow movement activity.

Finally, I’ll teach a scarf movement patterns for the song.

LEARN A HALLOWEEN SONG

“Halloween is Coming Soon” is set in a minor key to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”.

First I like to have the children do the free movement while listening to the song.

IS IT HAPPY OR SAD MUSIC?

I’ll play the music without the words or lyrics.

Then I’ll ask the children to describe the difference between the song.

Most likely you’ll need to play them a couple of times.

Ask some questions!

For kindergarteners, asking open-ended, simple, and sensory-based questions can help them describe what they hear in a way that feels accessible and fun. Here are some child-friendly questions you could ask:

1. Emotion-Based Questions:

  • “How does this music make you feel? Happy, sad, or something else?”
  • “Does this song sound like a sunny day or a rainy day?”
  • “If this music was a color, what color would it be?”

2. Imaginative/Storytelling Questions:

  • “Can you imagine a story or a picture in your mind when you hear this music? What is happening?”
  • “If this song was an animal, what animal would it be? Why?”
  • “Does this music make you think of a fast or slow animal?”

3. Energy and Movement:

  • “Does this music make you want to dance fast or slow?”
  • “Does it make you feel like tiptoeing or stomping?”
  • “If you could move like the music, would you be jumping, floating, or walking?”

4. Sensory-Based Questions:

  • “Does the music sound like it’s up high in the sky or down low on the ground?”
  • “Do the sounds feel soft and gentle, or loud and strong?”
  • “Is the music like a big ocean wave, or more like a quiet river?”

5. Comparison Questions:

  • “Does this music sound the same as the last song, or is it different?”
  • “Does this music make you feel the same as when you hear your favorite song, or is it different?”

These types of questions engage their imagination and natural curiosity, helping them connect their emotions and sensory experiences to what they hear in music.

IS IT FAST OR SLOW?

Next I’ll do an activity to help them feel Dynamics Fast and Slow.

It’s pretty simple. I’ll just play the regular version fast and ask them to move to the music.

Then I’ll play the “Halloween is Coming Soon” version very slowly and again ask them to move to the music.

We can then have a similar conversation using some questions.

Sure! Here are some questions you can ask children to help them describe if the music is fast or slow:

1. Movement-Based Questions:

  • “Does this music make you want to run or walk?”
  • “Can you clap or stomp with the beat? Is it fast like a race or slow like a snail?”
  • “If you could dance to this music, would you be jumping around quickly or moving slowly?”

2. Animal Imagery:

  • “If this music was an animal, would it be a cheetah running fast or a turtle moving slowly?”
  • “Does the music sound like birds flying quickly or elephants walking slowly?”

3. Storytelling Questions:

  • “Can you imagine someone in a story? Are they hurrying somewhere or are they taking their time?”
  • “If this music was in a movie, would it be for a scene where someone is racing, or when someone is walking slowly?”

4. Energy Level Questions:

  • “Does this music make you feel full of energy, like you want to move fast, or does it make you feel calm and slow?”
  • “Is this music like riding a fast bike or going for a slow, relaxing walk?”

5. Object Comparisons:

  • “Is the music like a fast car zooming down the road, or like a slow train going up a hill?”
  • “Does the music sound more like a quick heartbeat or a slow one?”

These types of questions help kids make connections between the tempo of the music and things they experience or imagine in everyday life.

WAVE A SCARF IN A PATTERN

When I teach a scarf movement pattern to Kindergarteners, I usually just focus on the movement unless they know the song really well.

I typically use the form of the song to create movement patterns. But this song is very short and the lyrics are a bit difficult for the younger ages. I’ve modified it to be A A1 B B A A1

To make it easier, I chose to have a different movement for each line of the song and to focus on the repeating A actions.
