Let’s take dive into ocean themed music activities for Preschool through elementary ages. Ocean music activities are a fun summer or end of school year theme. Students are looking forward to family vacations, swimming in the pool or going to beach.
I’ve found that ocean themed music activities are especially engaging for the younger children. So I’ve created an Ocean themed set of activities you can use in your classroom too!
OCEAN MUSIC ACTIVITIES
I like to include a variety of activities in each lesson so that there’s a way for me to connect with all my students.
Using a variety of modalities to learn music concepts helps me with classroom management too because everyone is engaged in the activities.
Each lesson includes activities to support the National Music Standards. Singing, Steady Beat, Rhythm, Dynamics, Expression, Playing instruments and Moving to Music.
I usually start with an action song, a body movement beat or rhythm activity, a playing instruments activity and scarf or dance movement. I also like to include lessons for solfege and pitch with most of my activities.
SING A FISH SONG
I like to begin class with a fun action song. First I’ll sing the song and do the actions. Then I ask my students to mirror me. I’ll sing one line at a time for them to sing back to me.

Dive into a world of musical fun and learning with the “1-2-3-4-5 Once I Caught a Fish Alive” Nursery Rhyme Song Activity Packet.
Perfect for early educators and parents, this comprehensive resource is designed to engage young learners through a variety of interactive and educational activities centered around the beloved nursery rhyme. Including writing, counting and reading activities.
MOVING WITH OCEAN SCARVES
Now were ready to wave our scarves with some ocean friends.
I begin this activity by having everyone stand in their spaces. We take a look at all the different kinds of animals in the sea. I ask the students to wave their scarf to imitate the animals.
Next we sit down and I have them take turns sharing their special movement.
PLAYING OCEAN RHYTHMS
In Preschool and Kindergarten I like to use this video so that the children can visualize beats as they move.
I also use the ICON and Quarter Note, Eighth Note videos.
For grades 1-3 I like to use a rhythm pattern video.
Each rhythm level comes with a rhythm play along video.
Quarter Note, Eighth Note, Quarter Rest, Half Notes, Sixteenth Notes and Whole Notes.
Each of the lessons includes the rhythms from the previous level.
You’ll find a small bundle of Ocean rhythm activities for each level.
Here is the OCEAN RHYTHM MEGA BUNDLE with all the smaller bundles in one. That way you can have Ocean themed music activities for all levels.
CREATING OCEAN RHYTHM PATTERNS
After we clap the ocean rhythms, I’ll have the students create their own patterns or play patterns. The flash cards and pattern cards are part of the small level bundles.
Students use body percussion and instruments to play their rhythm patterns.
DANCING TO OCEAN THEMED MUSIC
After we play instruments it’s time for a FREEZE DANCE!
COLORING OCEAN MUSIC SHEETS
I like to use these ocean rhythm and coloring worksheets on the second class time. They help reinforce concepts, gauge understanding, build logic and help students practice skills… and are a quiet activity.
