Hello! I’m sharing some fun St. Patrick’s Day Steady Beat music and movement activities you can use in your elementary music classroom and in your preschool music classes.
If you are teaching music at home, then you’ll be able to use these activities too!
ST. PATRICK’S DAY STEADY BEAT MUSIC LESSON
These fun and movement oriented music lesson activities for Preschool through second grades.
The learning goals are to connect to Irish culture and to practice, feel and show the steady beat.
The lesson is about 10 minutes long in video-but in person will take more like 15-20 minutes.
There will need to be some transition time between the activities and directions given too.
LEPRECHAUN BEAT SONG
The first activity is “The Leprechaun Beat” song. In this song we’ll move through the body parts playing the beat.
The actions are:
- SKIP AROUND
- CLAP YOUR HANDS
- MARCH YOUR FEET
- TAP YOUR HEAD
- SPIN AROUND
- TOSS THE GOLD
I like to review the actions a little before we turn on the video.
You can find this song on the Sing Play Create Kids Music Channel

LEPRECHAUN BODY PERCUSSION
After we sing a song I like to do a steady beat activity.
The Leprechaun body percussion set of activities has 2 videos and will have students having fun with the St. Patrick’s Day Leprechauns and friends as they CLAP, STOMP, WAVE, SPIN, HOP, KICK, ROLL ARMS & JUMP on the beat.
I like to review the actions and practice with a drum before we use a video. In the resource there are action cards and a google slides activity to help you help your students practice the steady beat.

LEPRECHAUN ACTION SONG
Now it’s time for a story and some movement. I’ll have the students sit down and I’ll tell them the story of “Underneath the Rainbow” before we sing the song.
“Underneath the Rainbow”
by Sandra Hendrickson
- The Leprechaun is hiding.
- Let’s see if we can catch him.
- Let’s find the pot of gold.
- Let’s look high and low.
- Let’s skip by the river.
- Let’s dig in the clover.
- Let’s look around meadow.
- Let’s hop along the footpath.
- Let’s slide down the hill.
- Let’s tip-toe through the flowers.
- Let’s sit by the shade tree.
- Let’s take a little nap.
- The Sun is going down.
- The gold cannot be found.
- The Leprechaun is hiding.
After I read the lyrics, we’ll go through them again and figure out how we can move during that verse. I like the children to create their own movement to help tell the story.

IRISH FOLK SONG 1-2-3 O’LEARY ACTIVITIES
Last I’m going to introduce a song called “1-2-3 O’Leary” to the students.
This activity is FREE when you SUBSCRIBE to our NEWSLETTER
I’ll have them sit down and pat their knees on the beat.
After they feel the beat sitting, I’ll have them stand up and use movement to feel the beat.
There are also opportunities to play the beat on an instrument like a hand drum!
And there is a fun game you can play.
