Let’s play instruments and learn beat, rhythm and solfege using “Snow”, an easy winter poem.
WINTER INSTRUMENT ACTIVITY SNOW POEM
In this post I’ll share the teaching steps and lesson outlines for the “Snow” poem with instruments.
LEARNING GOALS:
- Steady Beat
- Rhythm
- Solfege: so, mi, do
- Play a variety of instruments
You can differentiate the learning goals for grades K-2
TEACHING STEPS
You will want to spread these teaching steps over 2-4 class times.
Lesson 1
Sing the Song and play for the students.
Next Sing the song and ask students to tap the beat.
Next teach the solfege.
Echo teach the lyrics. Clap the rhythm of the words and have students repeat them back to you.
Now get out instruments and play the melody of the song.
Lesson 2
Review the melody and play the song.
Now we can add some rhythm parts at the end of each line.
You can differentiate the rhythm patterns for each grade level.

Choose one pattern and have them play it starting on the last of the word of the line.
Have them clap the rhythms first, then play percussion instruments.

MUSIC LEARNING ACTIVITIES
There are many ways to differentiate the activities so that students get many opportunities to sing and play.
Consider having a xylophone/singing group as well as instrument groups.
Lesson 3
After students can play the song clapping rhythms, divide them into 5 (five) groups.
Sit in groups by instrument.
Have students practice their rhythms together independently.
Play a steady beat as students practice their rhythms.
Now they are ready to sing and play the song.
Rotate students through each of the instrument groups.
Lesson 4
Another way to give students more experience is to then have small groups practice and then perform the song together.
Place 1 of each instrument in a group of five students. Have students play together in their group and then perform their song.
Lesson 5
If you are doing this activity in 2nd and 3rd grades, you can have them play a different rhythm for each line too.
Give them the opportunity to create their own rhythms and play them for their group or class.
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES
