Here are 3 elementary winter rhythm games you can use this winter in your elementary music classes right after the holiday break.
WINTER RHYTHM GAMES FOR ELEMENTARY MUSIC CLASS
I’m featuring 3 easy to play rhythm games you can use in the elementary music classroom during the first weeks after the holiday break or any time during the winter season.
All the details of how to play the games and how to change them for each grade and activity are in this teaching video.

PASS THE SNOWBALLS
Grab some white paper.
Write a Rhythm.
Crumple up the paper.
Now we are ready to play some games.
Students sit in a circle. Pass the snowballs on the beat.
Choose to use 1 or more snowballs at a time. Use more for those upper elementary students!
Try playing a drum or some favorite music.
STOP THE MUSIC
Everyone takes a turn playing their rhythm.
You can also use instruments to play this game. Give everyone rhythm sticks and have them repeat the rhythm.
TOSS THE SNOWBALLS
“Toss the Snowballs”
It is time for a snowball fight!
Use bean bags, recycled paper, balls, “Koosh” Balls. Play some fun music and let the tossing begin.
SET UP SOME RULES!
- Students are tossing to themselves.
- Set up some garbage cans for them to toss into.
- Divide into teams or pairs and toss to each other.
The resource has a fun song that you can play and use for a fantastic winter brain break for all classrooms. “Snowballs Everywhere”
Students can toss in their desk space, in personal space in PE, Music and special needs classes.
Imagine a winter brain break for those days you can’t get outside!

WINTER RHYTHM SNOWBALL GAME
Elementary music teachers! Are you ready to play an exciting and fast paced game to practice rhythms?
“Toss the Snowballs” is an interactive game to help students say and play rhythm patterns. This game is easily adapted to all grade levels.
It’s a print and go activity that you can use that first week right after the holiday break or any time of year. This game has adaptations for playing rhythms using body percussion and instruments too!
This game can be played with your whole class or in small groups for a wonderful WINTER music activity.
