Let’s sing and play “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom” in elementary music today. I’m sharing activities you can use with a story and song activity. I’m using “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom” Song and Story from the Sing Play Create Kids Music Channel.
This activity will work for Kindergarten-3rd Grade.
Even if you don’t want to use this story song, the ideas here will help you organize any book or video into a music activities.
The possibilities are endless and once you get started, you’ll love incorporating stories into your music lessons.
You can also get the free Video Activity Guide with these activities.

SING AND PLAY A STORY
There are many ways to use this video in music class.
Today I’m sharing how to use it by singing and playing instruments.
The video is divided into 2 sections.
There is the song and story section and then there is a LYRICS ONLY sing along section. (8:00)
There’s also two different songs in the video.
“ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM We’re Going to the Moon” and “We’re Going on a Moon Walk (hunt)”
The songs alternate with a COUNTDOWN from 10 inbetween scenes.
SING A SONG
I’ll start by going to the singing section and have the students sing the song.
Everyone will sing “Zoom, Zoom Zoom”.
For the song “Going On a Moon Walk” I’ll have half the class sing first and the other half be the echo.
CHOOSE ACTION WORDS AND INSTRUMENTS
Now I’ll review the ACTIONS and the instruments we’ll play during the action section.
There is one action card for each section of the story.
There are 6 sections with action words.
LIFTOFF, ZAP, BOING, DIGGA DIG, ROAR, ZOOM
These are some suggestions on instruments to use for each action word.
LIFTOFF-Hand Drum or a Thunder Tube
ZAP-Bells
BOING-Vibraslap/Rhythm Sticks
DIGGA DIG-Egg Shaker/Maraca
ROAR-Gong/Thunder drum/Tambourine
ZOOM-Cymbals/Finger Cymbals/Triangle
Pass out all the instruments and then practice each action section.
You’ll want to consider whether you want each student to have 6 instruments, or if you want students to only play 1 instrument. Then I would group them accordingly.
The sections only last about 15-30 seconds.
I’ll have the students play what they think the action word sounds like.
You can use the freebie slides for this part of the activity-or use the video and scroll through each section.
CREATE OSTINATO OR MORE SOUND EFFECTS
There is also a countdown between each section from 10 to 1.
On the countdown everyone will play their instrument 1 time for each number as they countdown out loud.
I’ll have them begin soft-or pianissimo and then gradually get very loud-fortissimo.
I’ll practice this too before we begin the video.
ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM THROUGH THE STORY SONG
Now we’re reading to sing, move and play instruments.
You can do the entire video, or use sections for different classes.
SECTION 1 SINGING ZOOM & GOING ON A MOON WALK
COUNTDOWN HAND DRUM
SECTION 2 ZAP BELLS
SECTION 3 BOING RHYTHM STICKS
SECTION 4 DIGGA DIG MARACAS
SECTION 5 ROAR TAMBOURINE
SECTION 6 ZOOM TRIANGLE
Practice each section so that everyone is comfortable playing their part.
Third graders may enjoy creating a special OSTINATO for each section.
MUSIC AND LITERACY GO TOGETHER
So many children’s books make perfect music activities because they use rhyming, beat and rhythm. And, children love stories.
In this blog post I list some of my favorite books you can use in your elementary music classroom to have a song and story time playing instruments.
LITERACY AND MUSIC ACTIVITIES WINTER THEME
And if you like this type of activity, you’ll want to check out this video where I share how to use “GOING ON A SNOWMAN HUNT” as a music lesson.
