TEACH DYNAMICS USING “SKIDAMARINK”
I’m sharing some ways to teach dynamics using the song “SKIDAMARINKADINK”. tons of elementary music lesson ideas to teach Dynamics.
I love to do action songs with the younger grades.
This is a free resource you can get when you subscribe to the Sing Play Create Resource Library on the website.
I think this song works for PreK all the way to 3rd grade.
I can turn this song into a complete music lesson activity pretty easily.
- BEAT
- PAT
- PLAY SCARVES
- DYNAMICS- SOFT AND CRESCENDO TO LOUD
- FORM
PAT THE BEAT
First have the students pat the beat as you sing the song or use the recording.
Teach the lyrics
Echo clap the rhythms of the words.
Echo sing a line at a time.
Sing the whole song.
DYNAMICS PHRASES
In section A I’ll have the students sing very quietly and then gradually get loud at the end of each section.
In section B I’ll have them begin quiet and get loud in each sentence like this:
SECTION A
Skidamarinka Dinka dink
Skidamarinka doo
I love you!
A
Skidamarinka Dinka dink
Skidamarinka doo
I love you!
B
I love you in the morning and in the afternoon.
I love you in the evening and underneath the moon.
Skidamarinka Dinka dink
Skidamarinka doo
I love you!
After we sing it with dynamics, I’ll teach them the actions.
All of the actions I use for this song are in the FREE RESOURCE.
Now we’re ready to put it all together .
RHYTHM ACTIVITIES TO LEARN DYNAMICS
AFTER SINGNG THE SONG I’LL HAVE THE STUDENTS DO A RHYTHM PLAY ALONG.
By this time of year I can have the students “be the teacher”.
I’ll have them come up and explain the rhythms and teach the class how to play the different patterns.
Sometimes I’ll divide the class in half and play a game using this video.
I’ll show a pattern and Team 1 will play it. If they get it right, they get a point.
Then Team 2 takes their turn.
It’s a fun way to have my students practice rhythms.
You can play this game easily using any rhythm flash cards.

PLAY INSTRUMENTS TO PRACTICE DYNAMICS
You can also have students create an OSTINATO to play as they sing.
I recommend you divide the class into 2 sections. Group A plays the rhythm and Group B sings the song.
You might want to divide the class into 3 groups and have them play the beat on a drum.
Anyway you try this, the students will be so excited to make their own music with this song!
BODY PERCUSSION ACTIONS TO SHOW DYNAMICS
SOMETIMES I’LL HAVE THEM START CLASS WITH BODY PERCUSSION
I use these activities as transition activities for my younger grades. It’s easy to play the video and have the students do the activity as I get the roll taken or deal with students.
I have had schedules where there was no break between classes- and this really helped me out as I’d have 2 classes in my room at the same time. One coming in and one leaving.
I review the actions and have the students practice them first. (when I’m teaching it for the first time.)
I can stop the video and have them do one pattern at a time.
Then I play the full video.
Next time I’ll assign student leaders who stand at the front of the classroom and model the actions.
Another way to use this video is to have groups perform each pattern.
I’ll make four groups of students.
They’ll each take turns doing body percussion.
When it’s NOT their turn, I ask them to clap the beat.
That way everyone is busy.

SCARF MOVEMENT TO LEARN DYNAMICS
Another way to give students experience showing dynamics is with scarf movements.
I use one of my scarf videos on the SPC CHANNEL, but you can use any music and have the students wave their scarves.
When I use the video, I just turn the volume up and down to signal to the students to wave LOUD and SOFT.
I want to keep the focus on LOUD and SOFT, so I’ll ask the students to show me a scarf move for LOUD and a scarf move for SOFT.
Then I’ll play the music and change the volume and ask them to respond.
Show me LOUD with your scarf.
Now show me SOFT with your scarf.
Scarf movement activities are AVAILABLE ON THE SPC YOUTUBE CHANNEL and the COMPLETE PRODUCT IS AVAILABLE ON TPT AND THE WEBSITE
