NOVEMBER ELEMENTARY MUSIC LESSON ACTIVITIES
November presents us with an opportunity to share the “real” stories of the first Thanksgiving.
In this blog post, I share video links that tell the story and how to use them in your classroom.
November Music Class: It’s Not Just About Turkeys!
You can use these videos to introduce Thanksgiving to your students.
Then use a variety of activities that include singing, moving, playing the beat and learning beginning rhythms.
MUSIC LESSON “FIVE FAT TURKEYS”
First, you’ll want to DOWNLOAD THE FREEBIES
FREE FIVE FAT TURKEYS MUSIC LESSON is a Free Resource and a video on the YouTube channel.
There are 2 versions of “Five Fat Turkeys”.

Version #2
Next, be sure to DOWNLOAD THE FREE NOVEMBER RHYTHM MANIPULATIVES (TURKEY’S)
FREE FALL BEAT AND RHYTHM ACTIVITIES AND MANIPULATIVES
Be sure to review the rhythms, tap the rhythms, say, and play the sounds and tap the rhythms and sing the song.
The first time I teach the song, I have the students use body percussion for Beat and Rhythm parts.
Stomping works great for Beat.
Clapping works for rhythms.
Next time, you’ll be able to have the students use instruments.
I divide the class into 3 groups.
- XLYOPHONE: Melody
- SHAKERS: Rhythm
- DRUM: Steady Beat
If your students can’t play the melody, then have that group sing as the other 2 groups play the instrument.
Then I have them play the song together, repeating it 3 times.
Then we switch parts so that everyone gets to sing, play beat and play rhythm.
If you don’t have instruments, you can also have the students create body movements for the rhythm and beat.
You can use this method for all of your Elementary music lessons.
SING SONGS ABOUT NOVEMBER
The Sing Play Create NOVEMBER Songs and Activities COMPILATION VIDEO is a sing along video you can use with your primary grade students.
They can sing the songs, read the lyrics, and follow along with the actions.
In between singing some of the songs, you can have them move with scarves.
TURKEY SCARF ACTIVITY
Or, move with TURKEY FREEZE DANCE activity.
Next, sing 1 or 2 more songs from the compilation video.
Then Do some turkey body percussion moves.
TURKEY BODY PERCUSSION
Practice moving on the beat using this cute turkey body percussion activity.
Finish the lesson by singing and playing Five Fat Turkeys.
I’ve found that having a movement activity afterwards keeps everyone happy and focused.
MOVEMENT BREAK
If there’s more time, students may have fun dancing to this silly song, “Do the Turkey Dance”
Or the “Turkey Lurkey”
If you haven’t tried STATIONS in your classes, then you may want to read this blog post to give you the details on how to set them up.
All of these activities can be used in different stations.
I like to use them during the months with big holidays because music class stations offer diverse opportunities to learn a musical concept.
They also provide social interaction and are a way for teachers to assess smaller groups of students.

I’m hoping this post helps you with your November elementary music lesson activities.
